42038 - Arctic Truck
42038 - Arctic Truck

Get behind the wheel of the massive LEGO® Technic Arctic truck. This monster snow crawler is designed to surmount giant snowdrifts and arctic terrain. Featuring 4 huge crawler tracks for ultimate maneuverability and its high clearance will get you everywhere in the arctic. The working front steering, massive cab with opening doors, sophisticated suspension mechanism for optimum flexibility, working crane arm with winch and hook, tipping cargo bed, and a cool bright orange and black color scheme provides all the ingredients to loose yourself in fighting the harsh conditions in a snowy world.

Experience arctic adventures with this magnificent machine! Besides you can upgrade with the 8293 LEGO® Power Functions set for working LED headlights, motorized crane and tipping cargo bed. Initially the rear axle seems to have unfished remaining pins on the 'PTO', but this is a preparation to mount the motor. You can see this in detail in the image at the topic "Suspension". This 2-in-1 model rebuilds into a Tracked Pickup Truck. On top there are several MOCs explaining how to put the power to the driving with the remote control power sets available to complete the full power experience.

2-in-1 model: rebuilds into a Tracked Pickup Truck

  • Boom reaches over 10” (26cm) into the air!
  • Arctic Truck (with crane boom lowered) measures over 6” (16cm) high, 15” (40cm) long and 7” (18cm) wide
  • Tracked Pickup Truck measures over 7” (20cm) high, 11” (28cm) long and 7” (18cm) wide

Features

Steering

This set uses on all 4 the Technic, Steering Axle with 2 Pin Holes with Dark Bluish Gray Wheel Hub 3 Pins Round, introduced in 2013 in the set 42000 Grandprix racer. By then this part was used for rear axles primarily. In this set it is used for steering as well. This results in a straitforward parallel steering without Ackermann principle. Due to the angled axle the steering is a bit heavy and not realistic because the tracks can't turn agains the axle moving the whole body up a bit while steering. The same issue we have seen with the Unimog set 8110. However it does not reduce the bad-ass character of this vehicle a bit. There is only HOG steering which is understandable due to the small size of the cabin, although whould have been nice if the steering will in the cabin was linked to the HOG steering, another great opportunity to build this in yourself.

Suspension

Both axles have free axles with independent suspension combined with the tracks and high clearance. The chance you get stuck with this vehicle is close to zero! The axles are connected to the chassis with a ball joint giving it flexibility in all directions. The suspension movement is guided by 2 trailing arms per axle, to increase the realistic construction as well. The dimensions of the suspension is well developed, because after compression the construction springs back to its original place very well. Because there is no fake engine you will not find differentials in these axles. For the Lego fan this is a great challenge to add AWD to this vehicle to my opinion.

Cabin

This vehicle is completed with abrutal looking though small but massive looking cabin with opening doors. In these harsh conditions you need a sturdy but small cabin that can easily be heated. The overhang is pretty far which helps in looking ahead while driving to avoid you get stuck in the rare occassion. The cabin provides seats for 3 passengers and the fake steering wheel can move between the left and middle seat. Left or right seat depends on the driving you are used to you can adjust as you see fit.

Gearbox

There is one knob for moving the cargo bed and moving the first part of the crane arm up and down. You can switch between the two functions while manually turn the knob in the middle of the Arctic Truck. There is a guide in the instructions to replace the manual knob with powerfunctions of set 8293 Power Functions motor set. The gearbox has 2 different functions and direction determine you yourself by either direction you turn the knob.

Crane

The crane has 2 hinges. One is moved with the small linear actuator through the gearbox and the second hinge is manual via a lever and the side. It has a 360 degree slewing generating good reach around the truck avoiding you need to move it to pick up stuff. The turning is by a manual gear 24 tooth tan double bevel on the side of the crane. The hoist to lift cargo onto the truck bed is also manual and can be moved through a gear 12 tooth double bevel. A pretty manual, simple construct and easy to handle crane which fits to the truck and the harsh circumstances this truck needs to function in.

Cargo Bed

The cargo bed in the rear of the truck can be dumped via the second function in the gearbox via a linear actuator. The dump angle is pretty steep so you can easily empty the bed without too much residue sticking into the bed I expect. By changing the turn direction of the gearbox knob on top of the middle of the truck you can move the bed dumping angle back and forth. With the linear actuartor the angle of the bed can firmly fixed.
